Victoire 42RE: the rise of a re-designed veteran

MONNICKENDAM _ The design office wanted “cabinet latches you cannot see from the outside.” A simple question but it stumped Edith Veenhuis. “Some suppliers told me ‘They don’t exist.’ I asked everywhere.” She found them, after a long search, in Italy. A story about the lengths to which Veenhuis’ employer, ShipRepublic BV, has gone to craft its upmarket Victoire 42RE sailing yacht.
In the Netherlands, Victoire is a storied name. Several thousands have been built since 1961, by different companies. At one point, annual production reached 50. In June, its current owner ShipRepublic introduced the most spectacular ever: the Victoire 42RE. The RE is for “re-design” by Powerhouse Company, a Dutch-Danish design firm. It’s an eye-popping upgrade of a 1985 Dick Koopmans Sr. design that caters to the demands of today’s yachters.
“It is one of the finest Dutch modern classics ever designed,” says Victoire owner Geert Wilmink. Powerhouse Company gave the hull and deck a very clean look, accentuating the yacht’s beautiful lines.  “Also, the exterior got a makeover. What was needed was an aesthetic change,” says Wilmink.
The Victoire 42RE’s interior is starkly contemporary. “The sort of high-quality finish you expect of a quality yacht like the Victoire,” says Wilmink. “Each is custom-built. That gives the owner a say in the interior’s ‘look and feel’ and functionality.” ShipRepublic says it advises its clients on materials and solutions throughout the construction of their future yachts.
The Victoire 42RE’s rigging includes a 3DL mainsail, a genoa and a 63 sq.-m gennaker. The genoa sits on an electric, below-deck Furlex . A hydraulic vang and backstay tensioner make for easy trimming. Wilmink says yacht can be sailed by a crew of 1 or 2. Ship Republic BV delivers the Victoire 42RE from Monnickendam. The yachts are made in Genemuiden and Amersfoort.
Veenhuis says design and production will stay in the Netherlands “to guarantee quality.” The Victoire 42RE hull is made by Adel Polyester, a company that supplies hulls and decks to several top sailing and motor yacht brands.  “We think going abroad is inviting quality problems in hull construction.”
She adds Ship Republic sees a market for quality yachts., “We have a number of highly interested  prospects. We are not a production yard. We are a company that builds 3 to 5 yachts a year.” ShipRepublic has also designed a Victoire 37RE.
