Urban ‘land sail park’ opens in Amsterdam
AMSTERDAM – It won’t be your funnest day out, but it beats cleaning the house. Wind ‘n Wheels, the world’s first urban ‘’land sail park” in Amsterdam, caters to those who cannot make it to a real sail boat on real water.
On an island in the Port of Amsterdam, the city has set aside 3.6 hectares (8 acres) for land sailing enthusiasts to tear around on wheeled dinghies.
Rutger Eltink and Guido van Rijn convinced a City of Amsterdam zoning panel to set aside land for their sail park. Panel chairman Frank van Beek: ‘We considered above all the plan’s creativity and financial possibilities. Wind ‘n Wheels is ideal for this windy, open location.” The city expects Wind ‘n Wheels will attract young people living nearby. A track for BMX bikers will soon open next door.
