Postma goes for Volvo race + Rio Olympics

AMSTERDAM _ No one can accuse Pieter-Jan Postma of putting the bar too low. The Netherlands’ top Finn class sailor, seeks a place on newly formed Team Brunel, the Dutch entry in the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race. He is also training hard for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

For now, he and Dutch sailing team see no conflict. Head coach Ian Ainslie: “Postma’s Olympic program is mixed with personal development activities. If that means an ambitious Dutch contribution to Volvo Race we see that foremost as a win-win situation.”

But if Postma joins Team Brunel, he and the Dutch sailing team may part ways. The Volvo Ocean Race starts in October and finishes in late June 2015. If by then Postma is no longer deemed top Finn class material, the Netherlands may cut him loose and rethink sending a Finn team to Rio. “It’s tough to speculate but Pieter-Jan will have to prove himself again in 2015 and win his place back in the Dutch team,” says Ainslie.

Postma, 34, looks back on a successful career. He’s the reigning Dutch Finn class champion since 2010. Last year he placed 2nd in both the Europa Cup and the World Cup. At the 2012 Olympic Games, he finished 4th.
