AMSTERDAM _ Functionality, says designer Willem Nieland, can beautify things. His 14m Korvet, marketed by Deep Water Yachts of The Hague, is for year-round, no-nonsense offshore cruising. It won the 2015 motor yacht of the year award at the 2015 HISWA Amsterdam Boat Show in March. It oozes the functionality that so appeals to Nieland. “You see traces of that in all of my designs,” he says.

The boat show jury called his Korvet a “successful combination of a seaworthy vessel and a fast one (with) an appealing interior layout.” Other nominees were the Aquanaut Andante 438 (also a Nieland design!), the Steeler Panorama Flat-floor 46, the Vedette Hollander Trend 32 and the XO 270 RS Front Cabin. The Korvet-14 is a smart design. Nieland found space for 2, 6-cylinder diesel engines and a generator. “It is a semi-double-decker craft whose bridge overhangs the lounge. That makes it a 14m boat with the space of 16m craft,” he says.

On the canvas side, the upmarket Saffier Se 33 was selected as the 2015 sailboat of the year. The jury said this of the luxury daysailer: “Not a cheap boat, but designed well down to the last details designed, perfectly built and excellent sailing qualities.” The Saffier Se 33 combines good sailing qualities and a luxury feel. Its powerful rig, fast hull, T-bulb keel, fixed bowsprit for a code zero make the Saffier Se 33 a light, comfortable and fast yacht.

The other nominees for sailboat of the year were the Winner 8, the Beneteau Oceanis 35 and the Pointer 25. The March 11-15 Amsterdam show saw 7% more exhibitors and 13% more boats than in 2014.  A visitors survey “indicated that 51% … purchased or ordered something or requested a quote,” said show manager Joost Ringeling.
