AMSTERDAM ~ The 32nd Amsterdam HISWA in-Water Show opened in an upbeat mood Sept. 1. The 6-day show in the watery heart of Amsterdam was a sell-out event showing 300 new boats from Dutch and international yards.

The show featured dozens of premieres. Crucially, organizers said after some economic ho-hum years, the Dutch leisure marine sector which employs 20,000 people showed signs of a revival.

“We are getting positive signal” from the sector, according to Geert Dijks, the new HISWA chief. Sales of used boats in the Netherlands _ especially larger yachts _ are up. Also, sailing schools recorded a 5 to 10% increase in registrations in the last 2 years _ usually an indicator of good times ahead. Boat rentals, too, have risen in the past year. At the 2015 in-Water Show all quay-side and show tent spaces were booked.

In 2014, the Amsterdam HISWA in-Water show reeled in 25,500 visitors, 213 exhibitors and 267 sail and motor yachts.
