DUESSELDORF _ The 13M, Georg Nissen-designed Contest 42 CS was named “European Yacht of the Year” in the luxury cruiser category at the 2014 Duesseldorf Boat Show.

A jury of test directors and top editors at 19 European sail and motor boat magazines praised the Dutch-built craft for its sleek lines and a clear design. “It brings the ambience of a 60ft modern luxury cruisers to a size that can also be successfully handled by smaller crews. Its excellent sailing performance is unparalleled,” said the jury.

The other sailing-yacht-of-the-year winners:

Beneteau Oceanis 38 (Family Cruiser category); Dehler-38 (Performance Cruiser category) and Sapphire-27 (Special Yachts category).

In a pre-boat show review, Britain’s Yachting World magazine wrote that the Contest-42CS “retains the seaworthy design and quality on which Contest have built their name with the likes of bonded bulkheads and horizontal stringers in her composite structure. Indeed, the Dutch have brought their semi-custom, big-boat mentality to the 42. Owners have lots of options, from layout and cockpit design choices to finishing details. It’s good to see the manufacturer return to the roots of the luxury cruiser size (40 to 45ft), offering a full package from under €400,000.”

Boat Dusseldorf jurors said picking 2014 winners was touch as “the market had never seen such a richness of good, well-balanced, attractive and special yachts.” The jury held two practical test sessions in Southampton, England and Porto Venere, south of La Spezia, Italy, involving intensive trials and assessments.
