Behold the Essence of Sailing

KOUDEKERK AAN DE RIJN _ Dutch yards send you back to your first love: the day sailer. But the open-cockpit craft coming off their slipways these days look nothing like the wobbly things you remember from your salad days on the water. These are sleek, 10m+, in-your-face beauties. For people who love a fast ride in a seaworthy boat. Ultimate head-turners, they put a premium on comfort, style and sailing qualities.

The latest entrant is Yagt BV. It is marketing an amazing Essence-33 _ nominated as 2014 European Yacht of the Year _ that caters to sailors who still want to sail, but also have other hobbies. And who want a fast, comfortable open-cockpit yacht. Coming hard on the heels of the Dykstra-designed Eagle 36 and 44 (from Leonardo Yachts), the Flyer-33 (another Dykstra, from Flyer Yachts) and Saffier Yachts day sailers, the Essence-33 is not exactly a back-to-the-basics craft.

The Essence-33 starts at €198,000 ($262,000). Yagt BV _ which has made 4 to date _ raises the bar exceptionally high in terms of ease-of-sailing, styling, materials and comfort. “The craft’s finishing is 200% from bow to stern. This is a boat for people who love beautiful things, but who are active sailors,” says Yagt BV General Manager Wout van der Meer. “Designed for the bon vivant with a keen eye for style and quality,” proclaims the yard’s site.

The boat is also available in a sports version. It came off the drawing boards of Hoek Design. Its fluid lines and flush deck evoke the J and F Class yachts Andre Hoek has worked on. The result: a luxury, seaworthy day sailer that sleeps 4 and, although it has a fixed keel, can be trailered.

A cockpit pedestal winch drives the main. There are 2 other 2-way push button winches for halyards and other lines. The boom vang and outhaul are hydraulic. Van der Meer: “Electric winches are, of course, not uncommon. But on the Essence-33 they pull lines in and ease them out.” The craft features carbon spars and a carbon-reinforced foam-core hull. It comes standard with a 13HP Volvo Penta diesel but is also available with an electric motor for those who cherish silence. Yagt BV’s day sailer has a flush teak deck that hides all the lines. All are led aft through dedicated tracks incorporated in the hull and cabin structure.
