AMSTERDAM – King Willem-Alexander will open the 2013 Amsterdam In-Water Boat show (Sept. 3-8) at Amsterdam Marina on the IJ waterway across from the city’s main railway station. Organizers promise “hundreds of brand-new boats in all shapes and sizes (and) , scores of global premiers,” including the Jozina Johanna, a spectacular 77ft sailing yacht (photo below).

With a carbon mast, furling boom, thermo-pane glazing and floor heating, the Jozina Johanna is a creation of Kees van de Stadt’s Satellite Yacht Design. The yacht offers its owner year-round live-aboard comfort.

The Amsterdam show  features some 200 exhibitors, 300 yachts, opportunities for sea trials, maneuvering clinics on a sail yacht, free sailing classes in day sailers as well as lectures and presentations.

The composite Jozina Johanna, which finished trials in May, was built by Jachtbouw Vels whose manager, Theo Versteege, says; “We build one-off yachts. Many of them are composite yachts.” Composite construction _ for example a wood or foam core in fiber glass and often reinforced by carbon _ is durable and requires little maintenance compared to steel or aluminum. It is also easier to work with as deck sections can be installed very late doing away with a lot of squeezing and cursing through tight spots to complete the yacht’s interior.”

The Jozina Johanna was launched Aporil 10, 2013. All in all, construction just over 2 years. Jachtbouw Vels makes sail and motor yachts from 8 to 25 meters, but also boat components. “We specialize in foamcore construction,” says Versteege. “That has an endless lifespan and a very high insulation value. Wood core is also possible, but that’s a stiffer material. There is a lot of demand for foam core.” The Jozine Johanna comes with a lifting bulb keel that reduces her 3.5m draft to only 1.6m. In combination with the twin rudders, the yacht can rest on a sand bank at low tide.

The Jozina Jo9hanna has a lifting keel and a draft range of 1.6 – 3.6 m. Special innovations include electric floor heating, double-glazing throughout, a below-deck anchor chain and a 30m carbon mast.
