NIEUWEGEIN _ Lobke Berkhout _ holder of a record 5 world titles in the 470 class _  has been named honorary member of the Dutch watersports federation. Berkhout deserves that recognition because “she is the most successful female Dutchsailor (who) continues to promote the sport and inspire the next generation,” says Maurice Leeser, the federation’s director.

No sailor has dominated the 470-class more than Berkhout, 32. She won the world championship a record 5 times with different partners. Berkhout: “I am incredibly honored. The federation guided me from the days when I was youngster … for which I am very grateful.” In January of 2013, Berkhout joined a sports management agency that guides the careers of Dutch athletes.

Some career highlights in the 470:

2005 – Gold World Championship, San Francisco

2006 – Gold World Championship, Rizhao

2008 – Silver Olympic Games, Beijing
