SOUTHAMPTON _ Lobke Berkhout and Lisa Westerhof, bronze medalists at the London Olympics, ended 2012 in the #1 spot of the ISAF 470-class world rankings. It was a brilliant finale to the careers of the 2 Dutch women (left) who retired from competitive sailing after London 2012.

Also ending 2012 in an ISAF #1 spot: Marit Bouwmeester (below) who won silver at the London games in the Laser radial.

Berkhout won 5 world titles in her career, plus an Olympic silver and bronze. “I’m delighted to end my career as the world’s number 1,” said Berkhout who will pursue a career in sports management. Her 470 partner Lisa Westerhof has returned full-time to her job as pilot at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

In the ISAF World Sailing Rankings at the end of 2012, the Netherlands was in 3rd place, after Australia and Germany. ISAF rates skippers based on their performances at ISAF-graded sailing competitions in the 24-month period preceding the release of the last rankings.
