WAGENINGEN ~ The Maritime Research Institute Netherlands, the world’s largest of its kind, opened its doors to the public on Nov. 8.

The response was overwhelming: In one day, 5,500 visitors checked out the testing facilities and simulators MARIN uses to make boats, yachts and ships cleaner, smarter, faster and safer.

The Open Day featured interactive demonstrations and rides on test basin towing carriages. Some 250 MARIN employees fielded questions about hydronomics, ship models, cavitation and propeller manufacturing. At MARIN’s Nautical Centre MSCN visitors joined the captain on the simulator bridge.

MARIN Director Bas Buchner said it was “great to see even French and Italian clients showing up with their families.” The Dutch maritime sector has a turnover of €17 billion a year and employs 200,00 people. Up to 15% of MARIN’s work benefits the yachting industry.
