AMSTERDAM _ Nothing lures more tourists than the investiture of a new monarch, highlighted by a royal balcony scene brimming with blue-bloods young and old and a water pageant. The April 30 abdication of Queen Beatrix in favor of her son William, 46, will see a peak in tourists in Amsterdam, notably from Italy, Germany and the US _ 3 nations that eschew royalty.

Expedia.nl reports a 35% rise in the number of Italians booking a 3-night Amsterdam city trip around April 30.  Bookings by Americans and Germans are up 31% en 25% respectively. Expedia spokesman René Nieuwmans: “Booking data around the abdication and investiture ceremonies show significant foreign interest in this historic event. The top 5 foreign visitors to Amsterdam: Americans, Britons, Italians, Germans and Japanese. Queen Beatrix steps down after 33 years on the throne.
