ROTTERDAM _ The 2014 Race of the Classics _ Europe’s biggest student sailing event _ starts here March 31. The week-long contest involves over 500 students from several Dutch universities racing in 2 dozen classic sailing vessels from Rotterdam to England, then back across the North Sea to Amsterdam. The 2014 contest is the 26th race of the Classics.

The students will crew on the 22 barks, clippers, schooners and other old-timers that are part of the Netherlands’ nautical heritage.

The event is designed to enrich student life with a North Sea crossing on classic vessels under the leadership of experienced skippers. It also raises funds for classic boat  restoration projects. The 2014 race begins with a Dutch Royal Navy gun salute in the Port of Rotterdam and a parade of sail toward the North Sea. Usually, a good time is had by all.
